An arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. One or more joints, as well as the surrounding tissues and connective tissue, may be affected. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Among other rheumatic diseases are gout, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis symptoms often develop over time, but they can also appear suddenly.

Arthritis typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50. Younger adults, children, and teens can also be affected. Osteoarthritis is commonly found in older adults, but some women develop the condition in their 40s. It is also more prevalent in overweight individuals and the seriousness differs from person to person.
